Johnnie B. Nelson Sr. passed away February 5, 2020 in his Bakersfield California home. J. B. Nelson lived a full life from start to finish. At 89 years old J.B Nelson was still able to fully care for himself. He took pride in his ability to travel and drive across the country in good health.
Johnnie B. Nelson Sr. was the son to Maggie McQueen. At the age of 8 years old W.D. Williams step in as father figure in J. B’s life. He had 4 siblings, Willie, Evelyn, Mary, and Lovie D. all of which who proceeded him in death.
By 27 years of age, J.B fathered 7 children; Paul Douglas Greer, Carolyn Jean Thomas, Larry Gene Nelson, Percy Lee Nelson, and three children who proceeded him in death; Anita Curran, Delmas Nelson, and Jackie.
In Wardell Missouri he met Lucille Nelson who became his wife of 48 years. To this union two children were born in Yuma Arizona, Annette Renaie Tatum (Nelson) and Johnnie B. Nelson Jr. Several years later Johnnie and n Lucille moved to Compton California where they lived for 35 years on Bradfield street where the house number was 310-635-0377 for all 35 years. J.B Nelson along with his wife Lucille Nelson were members of the local corner Baptist church, Christ Christian Home for at least 30 years.
Born in New Madrid county Portageville Missouri, J.B was a man from the show me state and he lived up to that slogan daily, you had to, Show him! This slogan went both ways because you did not just have to show him, he would show you. J. B. Nelson had a 3rd grade education. With this 3rd grade education he taught himself to read by reading mechanic books. With the knowledge he obtained, he started a mechanic shop in Compton California, with his son Jr. named Car doctor. It was on the street of his home of 35 years and his church of nearly 30 years that J.B ran his mechanic shop and tow business, “Car Doctor” for about 10 years. J.B eventually transitioned from owning his own business and retired from Sully Miller Concrete company.
In 2004 Johnnie B. Nelson Sr and his wife Lucille sold their Compton home and moved to Bakersfield California where they purchased their final home together. In 2006 Lucille Nelson proceeded him in death. Following the death of his wife Lucille Nelson, J.B Nelson remained active and full of life. He became a member of Rising Star Baptist Church where the Pastor is Kevin Edwards. After several years of being widowed, in 2016 J.B Nelson married Rella Mae Hunt. In his last days he enjoyed fishing, trips to the casino, and passing out food to the community.
J.B Nelson did not have a father figure or grandfather growing up and yet he managed to live a life where he played both roles to so many. He was known as Daddy, Papa, Uncle Johnny, Deacon Nelson, and Mr. Nelson. He leaves to cherish his memory 7 living children, 24 Grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren, Nieces, Nephews, and neighbors, many of which he played the role of father figure to. He is known for his incredible intelligence, his wisdom, and especially his unapologetic honesty. He lived and died on his feet and his legacy will be carried on and remembered for years to come.
