Obituary for Umamaheswara Rao Varanasi

Dr. Uma R. Varanasi
July 1, 1947 – September 17, 2022

Dr. Uma R. Varanasi was born in Eluru, India and grew up in a large family of 9 siblings. Despite humble beginnings, he graduated from medical school at Andhra Medical College in Visakhapatnam and moved to the US in 1973. He completed further medical and research training at Westchester Medical Center in New York, University of Wisconsin in Madison, and Mt. Sinai Hospital in Cleveland before moving to Bakersfield in 1980 to pursue a career in nephrology.

When he wasn’t working, he loved to travel around the world, play golf, dabble in photography, go biking as part of Tour Davita, try new restaurants, and spend time with friends and family. He completed the Polar Plunge in Antarctica at the age of 72 and considered it one of his greatest accomplishments.

He was a people person and touched the lives of so many individuals in his community and around the world, regardless of their age or background. He will forever be remembered for his kindness, easygoing nature, positive attitude (which persisted despite his hard battle with bladder cancer), sense of humor, and most of all - his spirit of generosity.

He is survived by his wife and 2 daughters.

Public viewing and funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 24th, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. at Greenlawn Southwest Chapel (2739 Panama Lane, Bakersfield, CA 93313). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Morning Star Fresh Food Ministry in his honor.
