Obituary for Thomas Paul Mullins

Tom was born in Bakersfield to Paul & Ruth Mullins. He passed away after an extended illness. He attended local schools, Hawthorne Elementary, Emerson Junior High & East Bakersfield High. He was a talented trumpet player selected to the “All City Band” while at Emerson. At EB he was active in Band & Orchestra for 4 years & selected to the Kern County Honor Band, graduating in ‘56. Tom enlisted in the Air Force during the Cold War era. After graduating from Technical School in Texas, he served in Washington State and California as an Accounting & Finance Specialist; receiving several commendations, was a finalist for airman of the Month at Travis AFB, CA, & was honorably discharged in ‘60.

After his military service, Tom enrolled at Bakersfield College where he received an Associate of Arts degree. Tom was active in the Associated Veterans club and the Wesley Fellowship club where he met his future wife, Stella Hockett. Tom and Stella were married on 11/18/61.

Tom worked at local financial institutions in operations or accounting. He graduated as a computer Programmer Analyst in 1970 & worked at a land development company. He worked at an oil & gas company for 17 years where he installed computer financial systems locally & overseas in South America & Europe. He worked as Manager of Computer Security and Disaster Recovery Planning in the late 80s in LA & Orange Counties. Later, Tom worked for Kern County Career Service Centers as a Computer Instructor until his retirement in 2003.

After retiring, Tom & Stella enjoyed cruises to Alaska, Canada & Mexico; also trips to Washington, Colorado, Nebraska & Texas to visit family & friends. He was an avid License Plate collector & a longtime member of the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association; a loyal supporter of the 49ers & Giants; & also a proud member of the Air Force Association where he served as Secretary Treasurer in the local chapter.
Tom is survived by his loving wife Stella celebrating 59 years of marriage. He is also survived by his daughter, Cheryl Hernandez & her husband Armando of Bakersfield, & son Glenn & his wife Beth of San Antonio, TX; & also by cousin, Madelaine McGough (Gene).

A special thanks goes to Hoffman Hospice workers Michelle, Amber, Mona & Veronica who made his last days more comfortable. Services will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery on River Blvd. at a later date.
