Obituary for Sandra Yvette Fleischer

Sandra Y. Fleischer, 85, headed for Heaven, in May of 2022, from Bakersfield, CA
Sandra was born in Staten Island, NY, September 8th, 1936. She grew up in the Bronx with her parents; Anton & Aimee, sisters; Aimee & Marcia. As a Bluebird, in 1944, Sandra sold Camp Fire Girl’s doughnuts to First Lady, Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt. As a teenager, she went to high school in New Jersey & New York. Sandra graduated from Fredonia Teacher’s College. Where she was the Maid of Honor in Fredonia’s Homecoming Court & the Senior Class secretary. She worked a summer job at the Higby Resort, in the Adirondacks of New York, where she met her future husband, Ronald. After getting married, they lived in St. Paul, Minnesota, Sandra started her teaching career, while Ron was attending the University of Minnesota. They had four boys: Stephen (Marci), Bradley (Patria), Mark, Scott (Victoria). As her boys grew older, life in the suburbs of Minneapolis was filled with backyard barbeques & camping trips to the lakes. Mom made sure that we visited many National Parks & historical sites during family vacations. In 1976, we moved to Bakersfield, CA. Sandra & Ron joined a neighborhood gourmet group, where they made many friends. Our family attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Sandra taught 1st graders & Kindergarteners for almost 40 years. In the P.B.V.U.S.D. she taught at Stine, Seibert, Castle, Hart (where she was their Teacher of the Year) & Sing Lum Elementary Schools. Mom earned straight “A’s” when she went back to college to earn her Masters in Reading Instruction from Cal State Bakersfield. Sandra loved traveling in the United States & internationally with family & friends. She appreciated the companionship of her dogs Daisy & Precious. Sandra volunteered at the Assistance League’s Bargain Box store, tutored and held various positions on the Kern City neighborhood board (where she wasn’t shy about sharing her opinions, with a New Yorker attitude.)
AKA Nana, she loved & was so very proud of all 8 of her grandchildren. When they visited, she taught them how to bake cookies, finish everything on their plates & played with them in her yard. Saturdays, she loved to find bargains at garage sales. Sandra was beautiful inside & out. She loved to dance, sew, knit, crochet, craft, cook, bake, garden, read & listen to the sweet sound of the wind chimes in her collection. Mom felt life deeply, there were many tears, but much more laughter. Alzheimer’s may have slowed & quieted Sandra down in her later years, but it couldn’t take away from a life well lived. She still had a knowing smile & a twinkle in those bright blue eyes.
She was preceded in death by Ronald (1st husband), Bradley (son) & Jack (grandson).
We would like to thank the Alzheimer’s Association, which provided activities & love for mom early on. Many thanks to May-Lynn and her staff at Dean’s Care Villa for taking such good care of her. Dignity Hospice you were a blessing to us just when we needed it most. Sandra’s Celebration of Life will be on October 8th at 11 AM at 1st Presbyterian Church 1705 17th St., with a reception to follow. If you remember Sandra & love her like we do, we will see you there.
