Robert Johnson passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2022. He was 75 years old when he passed away at home of a stroke.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanie and two of his three children, Paul and Tammie. His youngest child, Jamie, passed away from Covid last year. He has 5 loving grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Born in Oklahoma in 1947, he has lived in Oklahoma, Germany, Arizona and California.
Like many, he was inspired by President Kennedy's 1963 inaugural speech, "...Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." Robert volunteered for 2 tours in Vietnam with the Army's two Assault Helicopter Companies of the 135th and of the 118th of the 145th Combat Aviation Battalion of the 1st Aviation Brigade.
After returning home in 1971, Robert worked in the IRS's computer room, where he was later trained to be a computer programmer. In the 1980s, he worked for the University of California, San Francisco as a programmer for medical research and for the Department of Defense in San Diego writing code for missile guidance systems. In the 1990s and early 2000s, he finished up his career working for the Veterans Administration in Bakersfield, CA, where he retired. Before his health declined, he spent a lot of time helping his fellow Veterans.
A gregarious man, he was known throughout the community. He couldn't go anywhere without being recognized. Those who knew him can attest to his generous nature. He loved his country and was proud to have served in the U.S. military. A loving husband and father, he was loved much in return and will be greatly missed.
Services will be held at the Bakersfield National Cemetery, 30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd
Arvin, CA 93203 on Friday, September 30, 2022 at 2:00PM.
