Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Propps

Mary Elizabeth Propps was born Mary Elizabeth Banks (Jones) on June 12, 1936, to mother, Charlie Mae Fred (Jones) and father, Glover Banks in Texarkana, Texas. She was the second of two children with an older sister named Jessie Pearl Lindsey. She was raised in Louisiana. Around her preteen years, she moved to Los Angeles, California. From there, her journey moved her to San Bernardino with her mother, where she graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1954.

Later, in Bakersfield, she worked as an Eligibility Worker for the Department of Human Services. It was in Bakersfield, California where she met and later married her husband, Huevester Propps on September 2, 1970. They were blessed to maintain a loving blended family. She became fondly known as “Ganny” due to a grandchild’s mispronunciation of “Granny.”

Mary came to faith at an early age. She was a proud Baptist who attended People’s Missionary Baptist Church. She thoroughly enjoyed her luncheons with her church buddies lovingly called “The Homegirls.”
Mary was a cooking enthusiast. Til this day her BBQ sauce recipe is top secret, which her daughter, Elaine has mastered it. Mary loved to watch television and frequented shows like People’s Court, Judge Judy and Tennis matches, which her daughter, Darlene, got her interested in. As a teenager, she played tennis. Many people were unaware that she also raced cars in San Bernardino.

Mary is survived by her children, Mary (Elaine) Haynes, Pearl (Darlene) Johnican, Arthur Lee Ward, Jr., Giselle Ward, Mary White of Garland, AK; Ramona Propps, Daniel George of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; Limmie Propps (Patricia) of Sacramento, CA; Marciel Propps, Marlene Propps, and Francine Propps of Sacramento, CA; as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, her Honorary daughter, Shirley Amos, special niece, Sharon Lindsey, church family, and friends.
