Obituary for Marti Irene Sheldon

Our beautiful mom, Marti Irene Sheldon, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2023, bravely fighting a brief battle of cancer at the age of 89.

Marti was the second daughter to Martin L. and Marie Roux Hardwick born on February 17, 1934, in Bakersfield, CA. The family moved to Oakland, CA where Marti was raised, there she met many wonderful, lifelong friends. Marti graduated from Technical High School in Oakland, CA in 1952. Later, Marti returned to Bakersfield, CA where she worked for The Standard Oil Company. She met the love of her life, William (Bill) Sheldon, they were married in 1961. Upon Bill’s untimely death, Marti began working at Highland High School until she retired. Marti could be found at her children’s or grandchildren’s activities, on the tennis courts at the Bakersfield Racquet Club, playing bridge with friends, or working at the Guild House. Marti loved to travel; whether it was family or friends, she always had a fantastic time making wonderful memories.

Marti is preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Marie Hardwick, infant son Michael, husband Bill, and in-laws Mel and Peg Sheldon. Marti is survived by her children Leslie Monsibais (David), Larry Sheldon (Sheryl), Kathryn Rafferty (John). Her grandchildren Nicholas Mayer (Whitney), Matthew Mayer, Will Sheldon, Brooke Sheldon, Jennifer Rafferty, and Michael Rafferty. She is also survived by her great-granddaughter Adeline Marie Mayer. Marti also leaves behind her sister, Loudelle Margario, brother-in-law, Jerry Sheldon (Sue) and her nieces and nephews.
