Maria “Shyr” Dayrit, 37, passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2022 in Bakersfield, CA.

Shyr was born on October 27, 1984 in Alaminos City, Pangasinan, Philippines. She graduated from Polo Elementary School on April 5, 1997 in her home country. In 1999, Shyr, along with her four siblings and mother immigrated to Arvin, California. She was a graduate of Arvin High School in the class of 2002. She pursued a higher education and was the first in her immediate family to graduate from college, earning a Bachelor of Science in Child, Adolescence and Family Studies with a Special Minor from California State University, Bakersfield in June 2009. Shyr continued to advance her education and in August 2017, she completed her Master of Science in School Psychology from National University.

Shyr was dedicated to her full-time profession in special education, where she worked tirelessly in providing support for children with autism and special needs. She began her special education career at Valley Achievement Center (VAC) and worked at the facility for approximately seven years. Throughout her time at VAC, she served as an Instructional Assistant and later promoted as Program Manager and Intermediate-Afterschool Site Facilitator. After earning her advanced degree, Shyr continued to develop professionally and began her role as a Behavior Intervention Specialist at Bakersfield City School District in October 2014. Three years later, she was promoted as a Behavior Management Specialist for autism/severely handicap students. Shyr was known for her kindness and patience with children, as well as a mentor to her colleagues where she provided guidance and training.

Shyr was widely known as a “warrior” and a resilient fighter. She had a heart of gold and was selfless who always thought of others before herself. She had a bright smile that could light up a room, and dancing skills that made you move. She will always be loved and remembered. Her legacy will live on through her children and the memories she created with all of us.

Shyr is survived by her two children, Devin and Kayla; siblings Mary Jell, Donna, Neil and G-Ann; mother, Maria and father, Angelito.
