Obituary for Linda Kay Carpenter

Linda Kay Carpenter
December 10,1949 - May 31, 2020

Linda Kay Carpenter, 70, who was a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and second Mom to many others, passed away peacefully in her Bakersfield home on May 31,2020, after a courageous battle with breast cancer and lung cancer.

Linda was born in Bakersfield, California, on December 10, 1949, to Lee and Lucy Carpenter. She had two brothers Arlen and David Carpenter

She was a graduate of Foothill High School in 1967, and she was very active in school with several activities and sports.

She met and fell in love with Larry Sullivan and they married in August of 1968. They had two children, Shannon and Shane Sullivan. After 12 years of marriage they divorced. Linda took the children and moved to Wasco, California. There she worked numerous jobs until she was hired on with SaveMart Supermarkets as a scan coordinator. She loved her job and she and her coworkers became good friends. She also enjoyed seeing her customers on a weekly basis.

Some of her kid’s childhood memories with Mom were camping, driving to the mountains for picnics and driving to the beach after her night shift so the kids could hang out with friends and enjoy the nice weather. She would always put a mattress in the bed of her 69 Chevy pickup and take a nap by the ocean to hear the waves while the kids ran around. All she asked from them was to come back and check on her, every once in a while, to see if someone didn't take off with her!

Linda enjoyed playing softball with friends and bowling in leagues in her younger years. She was an experienced seamstress and loved making clothes for herself and others. She loved gardening and had the BEST green thumb. She could revive any sick plant that was just about gone!! Her favorite flower was a sunflower. She enjoyed refurbishing projects for her home and her yard. She was very crafty as well, and her ugly Christmas sweaters were the BEST!!

After 25 years she decided to retire and enjoy her role as a mother and a grandmother by taking care of her family and spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed watching them at their baseball games and other activities. She would take her grandchildren on road trips to Oklahoma to visit their great-grandparents. She had a busy retirement participating in family holidays, big family gatherings and birthday parties.

Linda had a wonderful relationship with the Sullivan family, she was always available to help and she was the primary caregiver for her children's grandmother (Granny) for several years. After she retired as a caregiver, she enjoyed lunches and Sundays with Granny!!! Linda had a passion for animals as well and she was actively involved in several animal rescues and adoptions.

Linda is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, David. She was looking forward to being together again in Heaven. Linda is survived by her daughter, Shannon and Kenny Branch, and son, Shane and Becky Sullivan. She is also survived by her grandchildren Tess and Kyle Spear, Trey Branch and his fiancé, Destiny Martinez, Ashley Sullivan, Kyle Sullivan, Zachary Sullivan, and Cody Sullivan. Also survived by her great-grandchildren, Tevin and Kennon Spear, and Calaiya Branch.

Linda had a wonderful heart and a loving soul, and we be missed by many. A special thanks to Optimal hospice for the help and compassion!
