Obituary for Jerold Ray Popejoy

Jerold Ray Popejoy
June 11, 1963 - June 3, 2020

Family and friends may be surprised to hear that Jerold did not in fact pass away due to anything his sister Renee did to him. All those times she tried to maim or kill him when they were kids only made his determination to live even stronger.

After his stroke in 2003, Jerold moved into the Special Care Unit at Delano Regional Medical Center where he lived for 17 years. While there, he made friends with his nurses, even playing practical jokes on them. Once, he pretended to have trouble breathing in order to scare the new nurses that came to check on him. His nurses know that he wasn’t afraid to say how he felt and give you a piece of his mind whether you asked for it or not.

Egging Jerold on in his orneriness were his faithful friends who continued to drive to Delano to watch NASCAR and football with him, read aloud books from his favorite author, play dominoes, and reminisce about their younger days.

Jerold looked forward to visits from his wife, children, and five grandsons, only a few of which inherited his ears and all of whom inherited his humor. His grandsons very much enjoyed operating his mechanical wheelchair and were amused by pushing the annoying, beeping button on Grandpa Jerold’s chair.

Jerold will be missed by all who knew him, but his determination and strength will be carried on by those who loved him.

And the Lord sayeth, gentlemen start your engines.
