Hugo Henderson Jr.

Hugo was born March 6, 1948, in Bakersfield, CA to the loving parents of Hugo Henderson Sr (from Elgin, Texas) and Lala (pronounced: Lay-la) Odessa Rice-Henderson (from Briggs, Oklahoma). He was the second son and third oldest of the Henderson children growing up.

At an early age, Hugo Jr. was nicknamed after a famous baseball player from the New York Yankees named Joe “the Yankee Clipper” DiMaggio by his mother who was a big fan. Hugo Jr. was fondly known as Clipper or Clip from then on! Clip lived in Bakersfield, CA most of his life and in Los Angeles, CA for a period of time. He attended Bakersfield High School and ran on the school’s track & field team where his events were the 110M Hurdles and High Jump. Clip also attended Bakersfield College where he obtained the trade in auto-body repair. Clip was later drafted into the United States Army. Serving from April 25, 1968 and was Honorably Discharged April 23, 1970 after his tour fighting in the Vietnam War. Upon his return home, Clip became a well-respected and sought after auto-body repair specialist. He enjoyed drawing art, playing dominoes, chess, cards, billiards and rooting for his beloved Oakland Raiders!

He fathered Darryl L. Oliver-Henderson to Ms. Brenda F.Oliver.
He was later married to his high school sweetheart, Esther Elijah-Henderson and together they had two beautiful daughters,Tonya M. Henderson-Reed and Ebonie L. Henderson. As life continued, Clip would eventually meet and marry Janet F. Henderson and assume the father role for Shakeiah R. Robertson and Ronnie T. Robertson Jr. Hugo and Janet Henderson together would have Hugo Henderson III, Brandon D. Henderson and Sandra D. Henderson. All together Clip would have eight children, four boys and four girls.

Hugo Henderson Jr. with the help from the love of his life,Janet, would learn more about and accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Hugo became a devoted Deacon at Rising Star Baptist Church, under the direction of Pastor Kevin L. Edwards (wife Sharon). Hugo would impact the lives of those around him with his booming voice, genuine respect for others and his discipline with serving his community for the glory of the Lord. Every Sunday Hugo would drive the church bus and was instrumental in serving for church services, revivals, vacation bible schools and community service outreach initiatives. Hugo is known for his no nonsense attitude, because we all know he’d be quick to call you out on it! He is also known for being a fighter for just causes. He did overcome the battle with cancer and made sure his family did not want for anything. He would courageously express his urge for family and friends not to worry about him during challenging times, because he knew without a shadow of doubt that his hope was in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Hugo is also known for his “smiles, styles and profiles”! A stand-up kind of guy, Clip loved to get suited and booted and would more times than not coordinate from head to toe!

Hugo “Clip” Henderson Jr. was called home to glory early Sunday morning on August 7, 2022. Hugo is preceded in death by his father Hugo Henderson Sr., mother Lala Odessa Henderson, siblings Lawrence O. Henderson, Michael W. Henderson, Sandra D. Henderson and Lonnie J. Henderson.

Hugo is survived by his wife of 25 years, Janet Faye Henderson, his children: Darryl L. Oliver-Henderson (wife Rayna), Tonya M. Henderson-Reed (husband Dominic), Ebonie L.Henderson (wife Farrah), Shakeiah R. Robertson, Ronnie T.Robertson Jr., Hugo Henderson III (wife La Brea), Brandon D. Henderson and Sandra D. Henderson (named after two of her aunts), two younger sisters Pamela J. Henderson and Karla D. Henderson, his baby brother Wyatt M. Henderson (wife Jeannie), twenty-fourgrandchildren and one great grandchild [Jeanae M. Oliver, Cherie D. Oliver, Darryl L. Oliver Jr., AnTony Bodon Jr., Miya Reed, Shaniqua Reed, Leyton Gamez-Henderson, Nikolai Gamez-Henderson, Tykeysha Murray, Johneshia McGill, Jakayla McGill, Johntanay McGill, Jada McGill, Johnny McGill III, Kyra Robertson, Keyaira Robertson, Ronnie T. Robertson III, Shiloh J. Henderson, Houston X. Henderson, Carson Henderson, Cayden Henderson, Sean Evans Jr., Nethaneel Evans and Jason Thomas III] along with a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.
