Obituary for Herbert Barrera Zamora

Herbert B. Zamora, 91, of Bakersfield, California passed away on November 18, 2020 at his home.
Herbert was born on September 27, 1929 to Esteban and Mauricia (Barrera) Zamora.
He attended local schools as he grew up in Bakersfield with his parents, 1 brother and 6 sisters. He attended Kern County High School where he played on the basketball team and graduated in 1947. Throughout this time, he helped his parents by working in agriculture in the valley.
He married Marjorie (Margie) Martinez on January 21, 1948 and together they raised four sons and two daughters. In his early years he worked for Jack Davenport Office Machines as a repairman. He then worked for the City of Bakersfield for many years before retiring in 1992.
Herbert enjoyed being with his family. He looked forward to taking them on outings around town and just spending time with everyone. He devoted many years after his retirement to caring for his wife Margie until her passing in 2004.
Herbert’s hobbies included woodworking, playing pool, and later in life, he grew fond of traveling to his favorite casinos. He could often be found playing his favorite slot machines. When asked if he had been to any casinos lately his response would be, “no, not lately”, with a chuckle. He would go on to say he went a week or so before, but that was a long time in his opinion.
Anyone who knew Herbert, loved him, and was blessed by his kind and compassionate heart. He was very humble and lived a simple life. His quick wit and infectious smile will live on in our memories of him.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margie, sons Herbert, Jr., Carlos and John, brother Steven, and sisters Pauline, Lucy, Ruth, Helen, Sabina, and Mary.
He is survived by his son Paul and wife Annie and daughters Esther Abbs and Rebecca Horne and husband Ron, 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
