Obituary for Henry William Scharf III

Henry W. Scharf III of Bakersfield, CA passed away on January 6th, 2023, at the age of 73. He was born on August 11th, 1949, to Henry and Anita Scharf who preceded him in death. Henry is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marge Trens and his children, Claire, Henry IV, and Alice, and his siblings Carl, Robert, Nora, and Anita. He is also survived by his children’s spouses, Mark Verti, Stephanie Scharf, and Sarah Keeney, and grandchildren, Victoria, Elizabeth, William, and Cora.

Henry grew up where the Army Corps of Engineers sent his military officer father. He then served honorably in the United States Navy as a Communications Technician First Class. Henry graduated from San Diego State University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and later with his Master of Business from California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB), in 1989. He had a long career as a Certified Public Accountant, starting as an Internal Revenue Service Field Auditor then transitioning into the private sector as an oil and gas and tax specialist. For many of Henry’s professional years he enthusiastically taught accounting and business classes at CSUB and Bakersfield College.

Henry was an active soccer referee for over twenty years. He enjoyed expressing his faith through participating in Knights of Columbus, men’s fellowship, men’s choir, and Bible Study Fellowship. Henry loved exploring the nearby National Parks and mountain ranges in his RV, but his favorite pastime was sharing an ice cream sundae at Rosemary’s Creamery with his family.

Memorial services information available through Green Lawn will be held on February 9th at St. Philip the Apostle Church. 9 am rosary, 9:30am memorial service will be followed by a reception in the church hall.
Burial will be February 9th at Bakersfield National Cemetery at 1:15pm. Cemetery requests all who attend arrive 30 minutes early.
