Born August 29, 1954 in Vernon, Texas to Jodie Lee and Josephine Yvonne Gathings. He was the first of five siblings and born one year to the day after his parents were married. They said Gerald (Gerry) was their anniversary gift.
Gerry was special---a gift from God that taught us so many things. Love, kindness, patience and compassion are just a few of the many things we learned from him. We will all miss him and look forward to the time we will see him again. For now, we know that he is with the Lord and Gerald has been made whole.
Gerry loved to be on the go. He loved to ride in the car. He loved going on field trips when he got the chance. He liked to rock in a rocking chair while listening to music. He loved good food and sweets. His favorite candy was chocolate. He would hunt you down for a piece of chocolate.
Gerry moved to Bakersfield, Ca with his parents and siblings in 1967 and for the last 29 years has made his home in McFarland with his family at Positive Directions #4. The Caregivers at Positive Directions #4 became a part of Gerry’s family and over the years loved and cared for him.
Gerry is survived by three sisters, Ginger Strawn of Golden Valley, AZ, Kyra Haney of Bakersfield, CA, Gwendolyn Armstrong of Saginaw, TX, a brother, Howard Grant Gathings of Lake Isabella, CA, numerous nieces and nephews, Trisha LaGue, Beatrice Sandoval and various other home and day program staff that cared for him. His parents precede him in death.
Services will be held:
October 22, 2020 at 10 am. At Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Park, 2739 Panama Lane Bakersfield, CA with visitation on October 21, 2020 4pm to 8pm.
