Obituary for Floyd Allen Petty

Floyd A. Petty, Jr.
August 17, 1924 – December 18, 2020

Floyd A. Petty, Jr. was born to Floyd A. and Druie Petty in Cumby, Texas. Floyd had an older brother, Glendon, a younger sister, Lynna Dean, and a brother who died in infancy. Floyd grew up in Hopkins County, Texas. When he was eleven he and his family joined the Dust Bowl migration, spending five years as a migrant farmworker in California, Oregon and Idaho.

On April 12, 1943 Floyd was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in the Americal Division on Bougainville in the Solomon Islands and in the liberation of the Philippines on Cebu and Leyte. It was on Leyte that he confessed his need of God and accepted Jesus as his Savior.

Floyd married Stella Christine Lynch in 1951. They were committed to each other in marriage until Stella’s death in 1999, raising five children. He married Arlene Derry in 2001, both thinking they might just last a few more years!

Floyd’s vocation was outside sales for most of his working life. Lacking formal education, he succeeded by perseverance and faith. He was an active member of Baptist churches, serving as deacon, Sunday School teacher and director, and in many other capacities as needed. More recently he found great satisfaction serving with the Gideons.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, and his first wife Stella. He is survived by his second wife Arlene, his children Connie Daillak, Dennis Petty (Mickie), Kathy Wright (Wayne), Nathan Petty (Sandra), Dan Petty, his brother-in-law Ira Lynch (Ida), fifteen grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and a nephew and niece.

Several days before he died Floyd asked that this conviction be shared with his loved ones – “There is no fear”. Truly there was no fear, as he had placed his life and future into the hands of Jesus Christ.

A favorite verse was Micah 6:8: “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”

Viewing will be at Greenlawn Northeast on Wednesday, December 30 from 4 to 8 PM. A graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Northeast on Thursday, December 31 at 11 AM. A celebration of life will be held in January.
