Obituary for Agnes McCormick Hardt
Agnes McCormick Hardt, who passed away on October 29, 2020 was born on January 31, 1928 in Bakersfield. She was the second of three daughters born to John and Annie McCormick who had immigrated from Scotland in 1926. She attended Standard School in Oildale, Kern County Union High School (Bakersfield High) and graduated from Taft High School with the class of 1946.
Following graduation, she was employed by Standard Oil Company of California at the 11-C producing department office where she met her future husband Floyd Hardt. They were married in 1952 at the Presbyterian Church in Taft. With the birth of their children, Margaret and David she was delighted to be a stay at home mom.
She was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church in Taft serving in every possible capacity from 1946 until its closing in 2004. Along with her church activities, she was also active in PTA and Girl Scouts while her children were in elementary school.
Following Floyds death in 1980 she became involved in several volunteer groups including West Side Friends of the Library, Native Daughters of the Golden West and the West Kern Oil Museum. In 1997 as a result of these volunteer activities she was honored by the Taft Rotary Club as the Outstanding Citizen of the year. Although somewhat quiet and reserved she thoroughly enjoyed being a volunteer but preferred to do her work in the background.
Her greatest pride and joy were her children and grandson and their achievements. She found great pleasure in gardening and particularly enjoyed the study of California Native plant horticulture. She also enjoyed being a student of state and local history.
She had a great appreciation for nature, both plant and animal and loved being out of doors. Her greatest dislike was bigotry in any form.
She is survived by her children, Margaret and John Ybarra, David and Debbee Hardt and her grandson, Cameron Schaffer, her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Barton Heuler; several nieces and nephews as well as special cousins in Scotland. She was predeceased by husband, Floyd and sister, Jemima Rowe.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Drs Tommy Lee and Nick Hansa for their years of special care as well as Nancy and Maria from Hoffman Hospice.
In lieu of flowers a donation to one of the following organizations would very much be appreciated: Presbyterian World Missions, Southern Poverty Law Center, or Environmental Defense Fund.
Due to Covid-19 concerns, graveside services will be private and a memorial service is being planned for a later date.
